Bangladesh beat Afghanistan

In a stunning cricket showdown, Bangladesh soared to victory against Afghanistan, securing their spot in the Super Fours of the 2023 Asia Cup.

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, marked by three critical factors: "perplexity," "burstiness," and "predictability."

Centuries from the unstoppable Najmul Hossain Shanto and the unexpected opener, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, propelled Bangladesh to a commanding 334 for 5.

Their partnership of 194 runs off 190 deliveries left Afghanistan's bowlers baffled and bewildered.

Shanto, following his gritty 89 against Sri Lanka, notched up a blazing second ODI century.

Meanwhile, Mehidy, who ventured into opening for the first time since the 2018 Asia Cup final, displayed incredible resilience despite facing cramps in his left arm.

The powerplay was a spectacle, with Mohammad Naim taking charge right from the first over, smashing boundaries with finesse.

However, a mesmerizing googly from Mujeeb Ur Rahman ended Naim's dazzling display.

Surprisingly, Towhid Hridoy stepped in at No. 3 ahead of Shanto but was quickly dismissed by Gulbadin Naib. Shanto, after a slow start, found his rhythm and partnered with Mehidy to deliver a breathtaking performance.

While Afghanistan's star spinner, Rashid Khan, battled injuries, Bangladesh faced their own injury concerns, with Mehidy and Shanto soldiering on despite physical discomfort. Mehidy reached his half-century, while Shanto achieved his century in style.

As the heat intensified in Lahore, Shanto's valiant effort came to an end as he was run out for 104. But the momentum had firmly shifted in Bangladesh's favor.

In the second innings, Bangladesh's bowlers, led by Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam, kept the pressure on Afghanistan. Shoriful struck early, dismissing Rahmanullah Gurbaz lbw, and although there was a missed opportunity for a review, it didn't affect the outcome.

Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah fought valiantly, stitching a 78-run partnership, but Rahmat's slow innings meant that Afghanistan's required run rate kept climbing. Taskin's slower delivery finally got the better of Rahmat.

Ibrahim continued to battle, scoring a gritty 75 off 74 balls, but Hasan Mahmud's delivery found his edge, and Mushfiqur Rahim took a remarkable one-handed catch.

Hashmatullah Shahidi and Najibullah Zadran attempted to resurrect Afghanistan's hopes, adding 62 runs in 52 deliveries for the fourth wicket. However, Najibullah's ambitious shot cost him his wicket.

Shoriful continued to make an impact, dismissing Shahidi, and Taskin wrapped up the innings, claiming the wickets of Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Bangladesh's victory was a testament to their perplexing and bursty performance, keeping predictability at bay and securing a thrilling win by 89 runs.
